School Education in Spain

Spain’s school system consists of several stages, covering children from early childhood up to the end of secondary education. Schooling is compulsory between the ages of 6 and 16 and is divided into primary and secondary education.

Stages of Education

  1. Early Childhood Education (Educación Infantil)
This non-compulsory stage is for children aged 0 to 6. It’s divided into two cycles: up to age 3 and from 3 to 6. Most families choose to enroll their children in the second cycle to prepare for primary school.
  2. Primary Education (Educación Primaria)
This stage covers ages 6 to 12 and is divided into three two-year cycles. Core subjects include Spanish language, mathematics, natural sciences, art, physical education, and English.
  3. Compulsory Secondary Education (Educación Secundaria Obligatoria – ESO)
Students aged 12 to 16 attend ESO. Upon completion, they receive a certificate that allows them to pursue either further academic studies or vocational training.
  4. Bachillerato
An optional two-year program (ages 16–18) aimed at students preparing for university. It offers different tracks such as humanities, science, technology, and arts.
  5. Vocational Training (Formación Profesional)
An alternative to Bachillerato, vocational training focuses on practical skills and prepares students for specific careers.

Public and Private Schools

Spain has public, private, and semi-private (concertadas) schools. Public education is free, while private and concertada schools may charge tuition. Many institutions offer bilingual or international programs in English, French, or German.

Student Support

Numerous programs and services are available to help students with special educational needs, learning difficulties, or adaptation challenges. The Spanish education system actively promotes inclusive learning and integrates digital tools into classrooms.
